We are deeply saddened to learn about the death of Bledar Spahiu. At just 43 years of age, the ranger from the Administration of Protected Areas in Dibër, Albania, lost his life last Tuesday on his way to a firefighting operation in Lura National Park.

According to reports, the protected area employee drove to a fire that had been raging in the national park for days to help fight it. Tragically, he had a car accident, which ultimately led to his death.

Bledar Spahiu had worked for the Administration of Protected Areas in Dibër for 10 years. As reported by Albania’s National Agency of Protected Areas (Agjencia Kombëtare e Zonave të Mbrojtura): ‘For 10 years, Bledar was not only a dedicated worker in the protected areas of Dber County, but also a man with a big heart who loved nature, to which he embarked on his final journey.’

Minister of Environment: Bledar’s dedication will always be an inspiration to fellow rangers

The Albanian Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro Furxhi, concludes her condolences with the following words: ‘Rest in peace, Bledar. Your dedication and example will always be an inspiration to your colleagues in the protected areas!’

He leaves behind three children. Our deepest sympathies go out to them and all his loved ones.
