Rangers around the globe protect biodiversity and communities in the face of climate change. But as little known as their important role still is to the public, it is tragically all too often associated with risking their own lives. On World Ranger Day (WRD), 31 July, we therefore commemorate all rangers around the globe who have lost their lives on duty.
This year, there are more than ever before, as the President of the International Ranger Federation (IRF), Chris Galliers, states in his speech for this year’s World Ranger Day: 175 rangers, the highest number of rangers who have died in the line of duty ever reported to the IRF. The actual number is likely to be much higher.
Every single life is far too high a price that rangers still too often pay for their commitment to protecting our planet. Many of these deaths could be prevented by better recognition and equipment for this important profession.

The Roll of Honour shows the deaths of rangers in service reported annually to the IRF, broken down by cause of accident and country.
We stand with the Rangers of the world and are united on this World Ranger Day in remembrance of all fallen fellow rangers. Rangers matter for all of our future!
