Tiny by dimension, huge regarding their impact on the functionality of ecosystems: Martin Rebbe’s passion and at the same time biggest challenge is to convey the importance of fungi, tiny insects – the smallest ecosystem members – to the visitors of Black Forest National Park, Germany.
As a volunteer ranger, his work is vital to building a bridge between nature conservation and humans: he supports rangers in raising awareness of the many subtle and not-so-subtle species and their crucial role for planetary health.
And: Mostly coming from local communities themselves, volunteers like Martin Rebbe and their work are also most valuable to integrate the perspective of locals into nature protection.
An important topic that we will be discussing at the 6th European Ranger Congress this October under the theme ‘Rangers – the Voice of Nature: Building a Bridge between Nature Conservation & Local Communities’.
